Creating Concrete Jungles with Cement & Concrete Mixing Trucks
Concrete mixing trucks or also known as transit mixers, are large vehicles designed to transport freshly-mixed
concrete from a batch plant to construction sites. The truck contains a rotating drum or barrel that mixes the
concrete while in transit, preventing it from setting or hardening before it is poured at the construction site.
The mixer drum is usually made of steel and can hold anywhere between 8 to 14 cubic yards of concrete. The drum
is designed to rotate continuously in order to prevent the concrete mix from hardening during ins
transportation. Once the mix is ready to be discharged from the truck, the drum is rotated the other way as they
discharge from the rear in most cases.
Rear discharge provides better control and percision during the process. It's also advantageous for the driver
to pull into best possbile positioning for pouring concrete.
The mixer truck is a common sight on construction sites and is an essential tool for delivering concrete to
locations that may be difficult to access by other means.
How much does a concrete truck hold and how much do they weigh?
Most of the used concrete trucks you’ll find in our inventory will carry about 8 to 14 cubic yards of concrete,
though you might come across some models that can carry up to 18 cubic yards.
For the standard mixer trucks which hold anywhere between 8-14 cubic yards will weigh around 30,000lbs to 35,000
lbs
and when fully loaded with its concrete mix, it can weigh to an upwards of 80,000 lbs, other materials like
mortar
could yield even a greater weight.
So why is it important to consider the weight of the truck once loaded? Like loading a dump truck or a freight
truck, mixer trucks could cause damage to roadways or add additional weight to bridges and possibly result in
road
hazards. It’s best to always check the specs of your truck and compare with local regulations around GVWR.
What’s the difference between a cement truck and a concrete truck?
Concrete trucks and cement trucks are terms that are used interchangeably but have a key difference. The
difference
lies between the material itself not the actual truck. Cement is commonly used in construction however cement is
a
binding agent for its final product, concrete. Cement is also used as a binding agent for other applications as
well
such as mortar or specific types of stucco and so on.
So in essence mixer trucks are mixing cement, but to produce its final product which is usually concrete.
How much does a cement truck cost?
The cost of a new concrete truck can range anywhere from $100,000 to $300,000 USD or more, depending it’s
specific
configuration and capabilities of the truck. However, at Ritchie List, you’ll find used concrete trucks can
often be
purchased at a lower cost, typically ranging from $30,000 to $100,000 USD, depending on the age and condition of
the
vehicle.
It is important to note that the cost of a concrete truck is just one aspect of the overall cost of transporting
and
delivering concrete. Other factors that can impact the cost of concrete delivery include the distance to the
construction site, the size and complexity of the project, the cost of the concrete mix, and any additional fees
for
pumping, mixing, or other services.
Overall, the cost of a concrete truck is an important consideration for construction companies and contractors
who
regularly use concrete in their projects. By choosing the right type and size of truck, and optimizing their
delivery processes, they can help minimize costs and improve efficiency, while still ensuring high-quality and
timely delivery of concrete to their construction sites.
